History, Origin, Culture and Traditions of Ebenebe Town in Anambra state

 
Ebenebe is a town located in the Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria. With an estimated population of 45,897 according to the 2006 Nigerian Census, Ebenebe is composed of eight villages, each containing various hamlets.

Situated 25 kilometers from Awka, the state capital, Ebenebe benefits from favorable climate and soil conditions for farming, making it one of the leading agricultural producers in Anambra State. During the leadership of Governor Samson Omeruah, Ebenebe served as the capital of the Ezu Local Government Area.

Ebenebe is bordered by Amansea to the south, Odoli River and Mgbakwu to the west, Ugbenu to the north, and the Agbaja (Ezi-agu) Local Government Area of Enugu State to the east.

##Climate
Ebenebe experiences a tropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The southwestern monsoon winds from the Atlantic Ocean bring heavy rainfall from April to October, while dry conditions prevail from November to March, driven by northeastern winds from the Sahara. The Harmattan season, known as "Ugulu" in the Igbo language, brings dry, dusty winds that reduce visibility and block sunlight from late December to early January.

Temperatures in Ebenebe typically range from 28 to 32 degrees Celsius from June through December, rising to 32-34 degrees Celsius between January and April, with the final months of the dry season marked by intense heat.

##Commerce
Ebenebe, like many agrarian communities, has a variety of open-air markets where agricultural products, food, clothing, and cosmetics are sold. The town features several daily markets across its villages, including Nkwo Obuno (in Obuno village), Abaegwu (serving Umuoye and Umuajana villages, also known as Egbeagu or Ama'gu village), and Mkpekere (located in Ebenenato or Eziako madu, which serves Okpuno, Umuaba, and Uwani villages). Additionally, markets are found in Umuogbuefi and Umuji villages.

The largest market in Ebenebe is Oye Ebenebe, named after one of the four market days in the Igbo calendar. There are two Oye markets in the town. One is located near St. Joseph's Catholic Church cemetery in Agbangwo (Umuoye village), while the other is opposite Obuno Primary School along Umumba ndi-uno, which connects to Eziagu Local Government Area in Enugu State. Oye markets attract visitors from surrounding towns like Ugbenu, Ugbene, Agbaja, Amansea, Achalla, Oba-ofemmili, Ugwu-oba, as well as traders from Awka and Onitsha. The market is known for the sale of agricultural goods, which are often resold in major markets such as Eke Awka and Onitsha Main Market. Umuji also hosts a four-day market called Nkwo Umuji, situated beside the Ezu River.

##Hospital
The primary healthcare facility in Ebenebe is the Mobile Hospital, which also serves nearby villages. The hospital was initiated by Dr. Eugen E. Jungjohann, a children’s psychiatrist from Düsseldorf, with support from the Samuel Foundation. It was completed and officially opened in 1992, providing 20 beds and an operating theater. In 1994, an extension was added, which also included a nursing school for eight students. The hospital's construction was supported by artists from Düsseldorf, who donated artwork for an auction to fund the project. The Mobile Hospital is located near the boundary between Umuji and Amagu villages, in a region known as Ugwu Iyi-ocha.

##Postal Service
The Nigerian Postal Service operates a post office in Amagu (Umuoye) village, specifically at Ugwu-agbangwo near the Oye market, and a postal agency in Obuno village.

##Rivers and Water Sources
Ebenebe is blessed with numerous rivers and springs, including Ngwere-agbago, Omuzo, Omuzo Umuonicha, Iyi-ocha, Omereze, Nwangbala, Odede, Iyi Oku, Iyi Agbangwo, Ezu Odoli, and Ezu Ajali. Governor Peter Obi inaugurated a new bridge across the Ezu Ajali River at Umuji village in 2012 after the collapse of the previous bridge in 2008. This bridge serves as a boundary between Ebenebe and Amansea, while also connecting several communities along the route, including Ugbenu, Ugbene, Awba-Ofemili, and other towns in Eziagu Local Government Area. Additionally, the rivers Odoli and Ajali form a large riverbed in the Agbangwo area, marking the boundary between Ebenebe and Mgbakwu.
