History, Origin, Culture and Traditions of Awkuzu Town in Anambra state

 
Awkuzu is a town located in Anambra State, within the Oyi Local Government Area in southeastern Nigeria. The town traces its origins to Nri, the ancestral home and birthplace of Igbo civilization. Nri's lineage continued through generations until a man named Nnamenyi was born.

Nnamenyi carried forward the legacy of his ancestors and fathered five children: Ogbunike, Awkuzu, Umuleri, Nando, and Onitsha. As one of Nnamenyi's descendants, Awkuzu grew up, married his beautiful wife Iguedo, and together they began their own family.

Awkuzu is one of the largest towns in the Oyi Local Government Area. It shares borders with Njikoka to the east, Nteje to the north, Umunya to the west, and Ifitedunu to the south. The town is made up of three main villages: Ezi, Ifite, and Ikenga.

Ezi is the largest of the three villages, and within it lies the traditional throne of the town, situated in the smallest village, Iruayika, which belongs to the Aganama family.

Upon the death of King Aganama the Fourth, the throne was taken by the late King John Nnebeolisa. However, following the passing of King Nnebeolisa, the throne was restored to the original Aganama family. Currently, the paramount ruler of Awkuzu is King Aganama the Fifth, His Royal Highness Nweke Okafor, who leads with a cabinet of chiefs selected from all three villages.

The customs and traditions of the Awkuzu people are typical of those in Igbo land. The fertile land of Awkuzu is known for its agricultural richness, especially in the cultivation of cassava, yam, maize, and rice. The town is home to many prominent figures who have made significant contributions to the state and the nation. Notable individuals include His Grace, The Most Rev. Maxwell C. Anikwenwa, the retired Bishop of Awka, Arch Bishop of the Province on the Niger, and Dean of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), as well as the late Bishop Oteh, Hon. Uchenna Okafor, Hon. Echesi (former Commissioner for Finance, Anambra State), and Hon. Nnacheta Tony (Commissioner for Sports, Anambra State), among others.

The Civic Center, located at the heart of Awkuzu, is a focal point for the community. The town also boasts primary and secondary schools, as well as churches for worship. Awkuzu, with its rich cultural heritage, draws visitors, especially during its three major annual traditional festivals: Alomuo, Onwa Asato, and Onwa Ato. Like other Igbo towns, Awkuzu follows a four-day market cycle: Eke, Orie, Afor, and Nkwo.
