History of Assassination Attempts in Nigeria

In this post, you are going to learn about some of the assassination attempts that has happened in Nigeria and the names of those affected. In January 15, 1966 the prime minister of Nigeria Alhaji Sir Abubakar Tafewa Balewa was killed in a coup d’état by Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna. In January 15 ,1966 the Saraduna of Sokoto and also the premier of the then northern region of Nigeria Alhaji sir Ahmadu Ibrahim Bello was killed in coup d’état by Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu. In January 15, 1966 the premier of the then western region Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola was killed in a coup d’état in his house by a group of soldiers led by Captain Emmanuel Nwobisi. In July 29, 1966 lieutenant-colonel Adekunle Fajuyi the then military governor of the western region was assassinated in a coup d’état by a group of soldiers led by Major Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma. In July 29, 1966 General Aguyi Johnson Ironsi the head of state of Nigeria was assassinated in a coup d’état by a group of soldiers led by Major Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma. In February 13, 1976 Brigadier General Muritala Ramat Muhammed the head of state of Nigeria was assassinated in a coup attempt by lieutenant colonel Buka Suka Dimka. In October 19, 1986 popular Nigerian journalist Dele Giwa was killed by a parcel bomb in his home at Ikeja, Lagos, while in his study with Kayode Soyinka. In June 4, 1996 Kudirat Abiola wife of popular Nigerian politician Moshood Abiola was assassinated in her car. In 23 December, 2001, Minister of Justice Chief James Ajibola Idowu Ige popularly known as Bola Ige was shot dead at his home in the south-western city of Ibadan. In October 16, 2011 Borno state legislator Modu Bintube was killed by people suspected to be boko haram militants. In July 2, 2016 Oyo state legislator and lawmaker Gideon Aremu was killed by four suspected assassins.
