History and Origin of Evangel University, Akaeze

 
Evangel University, Akaeze (EUA) is a private Christian university located in Ebonyi State, Nigeria.  Established in 2012 by the Assemblies of God Nigeria, EUA is committed to providing holistic education that integrates academic excellence with moral and spiritual development.

##History and Founding
Evangel University was officially licensed by the Federal Government of Nigeria on February 28, 2012, as one of five private universities approved that year.  The university commenced academic activities on November 27, 2012, for the 2012/2013 academic session at its take-off campus in Okpoto, located at Kilometer 48 along the Enugu-Abakaliki Expressway.  Initially, EUA began with two colleges and a School of General Studies.  Over time, it expanded to four colleges, with ongoing developments aimed at relocating to its permanent campus in Akaeze.  

##Motto and Educational Philosophy
The university's motto, "Education for the total man," reflects its mission to offer comprehensive education that fosters academic integrity, scientific inquiry, tolerance for diverse views, and faith in the Bible as God's Word.  EUA aims to produce graduates equipped for total service to God, humanity, and society at large.

##Accreditation and Academic Programs
Evangel University received full accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2016.  The university comprises four main colleges: 

College of Science

College of Health Sciences

College of Management Sciences

College of Arts and Social Sciences


These colleges offer a variety of undergraduate programs, including but not limited to:

In December 2024, the NUC conducted an accreditation visit for the English program, which received a score of 86.80%, granting it full accreditation status.  

##Leadership: Vice Chancellor
The current Vice Chancellor of Evangel University is Professor Iche Ukpai Kalu.  Under his leadership, the university has seen significant growth in both academic offerings and infrastructure development.  

##Notable Alumni
One of the distinguished individuals associated with Evangel University is Professor Emeka Joseph Otagburuagu.  He has served as Professor of Applied Linguistics and Head of the Department of English in the Faculty of Arts at EUA.  Professor Otagburuagu has also held various academic and administrative positions at other Nigerian universities, contributing significantly to the field of English studies.
