##Founder
The university was founded by the Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. It was part of a batch of new federal universities established in 2011 to expand tertiary education access across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.

Thus, the “founder” in the sense of the initiating body is the Federal Government, acting through the Ministry of Education and the National Universities Commission (NUC).

##History
The history of the Federal University, Dutse is short in years but rich in meaning and rapid development. FUD was among the twelve (12) new federal universities established by the Nigerian Government in February 2011. Its charter was received on 9 February 2011 and it was formally inaugurated on 10 March 2011 in Dutse, Jigawa Stat

At its inception, the university began with a modest student intake and limited programmes. According to reports, the inaugural academic session (2011/2012) had about 205 students in three faculties: Agriculture, Arts and Social Sciences, and Sciences. 

It utilised a “take-off” site (the former Government House/Kandahar and the old Model International School site) while planning for its permanent campus infrastructure. The Jigawa State government donated the old site of Dutse Model International School and about 500 hectares of land for development. 

In its early years, the university’s challenge was to build infrastructure, recruit qualified staff, accredit programmes and establish its identity. By the academic period up to 2020, the university had expanded to six faculties (including Computing, Management Sciences, and Medical & Health Sciences) and around 32 undergraduate programmes. 

More recently, licences from the NUC show that FUD has continued growth: for example, in 2025 the NUC approved 26 new academic programmes for the university, effective from the 2025/26 session. 

In sum, FUD’s history is one of rapid evolution: from a small institution in 2011 to a growing university with multiple faculties, expanding student population, postgraduate programmes and a deepening reputation. Chancellor
The Chancellor of FUD is W.S. Joshua Igbugburu X (commonly styled King Igbugburu), the Ebenanawei of Bomo Kingdom, who was installed as the university’s second Chancellor in February 2024. 

Brief Biography:
His Majesty holds the traditional title Ebenanawei of Bomo Kingdom (in what is today Edo State). His appointment as Chancellor is ceremonial: the Chancellor presides over convocations, represents the university in formal functions and acts as a symbolic link between the academy, tradition and society. With his appointment, FUD reinforces the importance of community and tradition in its identity, even while it aspires to global standards.

##Accreditation and Recognition
Accreditation and recognition are essential indicators of an institution’s credibility, and FUD has made significant strides in this area:

In June 2024, the National Universities Commission (NUC) granted accreditation status to ten programmes at FUD, including Masters programmes in Public Policy & Administration, Fisheries, English, Botany, Chemistry, Physics, Zoology, Criminology & Security Studies and Political Science; interim accreditation was given to Cyber Security. 

In August 2025, the NUC approved 26 new academic programmes for FUD, effective from 2025/26, expanding its undergraduate and postgraduate offerings.

Faculty of Agriculture
The Faculty of Agriculture is among the pioneer faculties. It started with departments such as Agricultural Economics & Extension, Animal Science, Crop Science and Soil Science; later Departments of Fisheries & Aquaculture and Forestry & Wildlife were added. The faculty boasts a university farm of about 150 hectares with multiple production units (cattle, fish, poultry, nursery etc).
