Delta State, in Nigeria’s South-South region, has a vibrant higher education ecosystem. The state is home to several universities—federal, state-owned, and private—that offer a variety of programmes in science, technology, arts, health, maritime studies, and more. These institutions provide students with multiple paths depending on their interests, budget, and preferred learning environments.
In this blog post, we are going to walk you through the list of federal, state, and private universities in Delta State and describe each of them.
##Federal
1. Nigerian Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko:
This is a federal institution established in 2018, located in Okerenkoko, Delta State. As a specialized maritime university, its mandate is to deliver high-quality education and research in maritime disciplines, navigational sciences, logistics, ship design and management, and related nautical fields. The university aims to support Nigeria’s maritime industry, which is crucial for trade, transport, and economic development in coastal and riverine regions.

2. Delta State University, Abraka (DELSU):
Founded in 1992, DELSU is one of the older state universities in Delta State, situated in Abraka. It offers a broad array of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across multiple faculties such as Arts, Education, Sciences, Social Sciences, Management, Law, and the medical/health-related fields. It also has satellite campuses and is known for a solid academic reputation, research output, and alumni in various professional sectors.
3. University of Delta, Agbor (UNIDEL):
Established in 2021, UNIDEL is a fairly new state university in Agbor, Delta State. The university is intended to broaden access to tertiary education within the state, reduce the burden on older institutions, and provide modern infrastructure. It runs faculties in core disciplines and is designed to respond to local needs and development challenges while maintaining academic standards.
4. Southern Delta University, Ozoro (SDU)
Also founded in 2021 formally Delta State University of Science and Technology (DSUST), located in Ozoro, is a state university with a focus on various disciplines, science, technology, and applied disciplines. Its establishment reflects Delta State’s effort to harness technical skills and STEM education to address industrial and technological development both locally and nationally.
5. Dennis Osadebe University, Asaba (DOU):
Another of the new state universities (also established in 2021), Dennis Osadebe University in Asaba aims to expand access to state-sponsored higher education, especially in the state capital. It offers diverse programmes and seeks to combine academic training with research, community engagement, and infrastructural development.
6. Michael & Cecilia Ibru University (MCIU), Agbarha-Otor:
Though often classified among state-founded institutions, MCIU is a more private/faith associated initiative but is included in the state list. Located in Agbarha-Otor, Ughelli North, the university provides academic programmes across various faculties including sciences, humanities, and social sciences. It is known for relatively modern facilities and community engagement.

7. Admiralty University, Ibusa:
Admiralty University, established in 2017 in Ibusa, is a private university with special strength in maritime, nautical, and related studies, consistent with its strategic location near waterways. It aims to contribute to the development of maritime professionals and to serve sectors such as shipping, logistics, marine engineering, and coastal environmental management.
8. Edwin Clark University (ECU), Kiagbodo:
Founded in 2015, Edwin Clark University is a private institution located in Kiagbodo (Burutu-Kiagbodo). It offers programmes in a spectrum of fields including Natural Sciences, Humanities, Social Sciences, Management, and other professional areas. The university aims to combine modern education with community development and practical training.
9. Novena University, Ogume:
Novena University, located at Kwale, Ogume, was established in 2005. As a private university, it delivers courses across humanities, sciences, management, and allied fields. It appeals to students seeking private university environment with established reputation and programmes outside the state institutions.
10. Western Delta University (WDU), Oghara:
Founded in 2007, Western Delta University is a private institution in Oghara. It provides a variety of undergraduate programmes in arts, sciences, social sciences, education, and business. The university is known for balancing academic offerings with infrastructural development and efforts to maintain smaller class sizes and personal attention to students.
11. Margaret Lawrence University, Galilee:
Margaret Lawrence University is among the newer private universities (established in 2022) in Delta State, located at Galilee. It is positioning itself with modern structures, aiming to offer updated curricula and engaged teaching, especially to serve students with interests in newer disciplines and contemporary skills.
12. Sports University of Nigeria, Idumuje-Ugboko:
Also established in 2022, the Sports University of Nigeria in Idumuje-Ugboko is a private institution focused on sports-related courses. It is tailored for students interested in sports science, physical education, sports management, coaching, health and fitness, and other athletic disciplines. It represents a niche but increasingly important field given rising interest in sports and wellness.
