The founding vision was that of an “autonomous, indigenously managed university” rather than a branch campus of a foreign institution. Over time, UNN expanded both academically and physically.

From its earliest days, the university established core faculties such as Arts, Sciences, Agriculture, Engineering and Education. For example, the Faculty of Agriculture was founded in October 1960 and designated as the first land-grant faculty of Agriculture in Nigeria and Africa. 

Through the decades UNN weathered challenges—political, economic, infrastructural, and societal—but it has continued to grow and diversify. Its departments expanded; its student population rose; research became more prominent; and its regional role increased. As of one recent report, UNN had 17 faculties and 102 academic departments covering more than 100 undergraduate programmes and over 200 postgraduate programmes.

Brief Biography:

Born into the Giesi ruling house of Ile-Ife, he became the 51st Ooni of Ife. 

He holds an academic background in Accountancy and is a Chartered Accountant, and has been engaged in real estate development and leadership roles.

In his role as Chancellor, he serves as the ceremonial head of UNN: presiding over convocations, representing the university in high-profile engagements, and symbolically linking the institution to Nigeria’s cultural and traditional leadership structures.

The involvement of a prominent traditional ruler as Chancellor reflects the blend of academic aspiration and Nigerian cultural symbolism; the role is largely non-executive, with operational leadership handled by the Vice-Chancellor and principal officers.

##Accreditation and Recognition
