##Founder
The University of Maiduguri was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 1975 as part of its Second-Generation university programme under the Third National Development Plan (1975-80)

The university inherited the former North East College of Arts and Science (NECAS) premises and staff to facilitate its early operations.

##History
The history of the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) is both inspiring and instructive, reflecting how higher education institutions can emerge and adapt in demanding environments. In 1975 the Federal Government of Nigeria created the university; initially UNIMAID did not have its own fully developed physical campus. In April 1976 the university inherited the premises of the former North East College of Arts and Science (NECAS), which provided classrooms, laboratories, staff quarters and administrative blocks. 

Academic activities began in October 1976, with the first enrolment of students across three faculties: Arts & Education, Science, and Social Science & Law. That first year witnessed 743 students admitted into these faculties. 

By 1978, the university had expanded to six faculties with the creation of the Faculty of Agriculture and the separation of Law from Social Sciences. The university continued to grow: by 2000 its enrolment had reached approximately 26,000 students and it had eight faculties including a College of Medical Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. 

By the end of 2016, UNIMAID had a College of Medical Sciences, a School of Postgraduate Studies, and twelve faculties covering Agriculture, Arts, Dentistry, Education, Engineering, Law, Management Sciences, Pharmacy, Science, Social Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine. 

All the while, the university has had to navigate the specific challenges of its region — including infrastructural constraints, security dynamics, and the need to provide programmes responsive to arid-zone context, pastoralism, cross-border cultural linkages and disaster/peace studies. At the same time it has striven to uphold academic standards, expand research, improve facilities and serve both Nigeria and the wider Lake Chad basin region. ##Chancellor
The Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri is His Royal Highness Hon. Justice Sidi Bage Muhammad I, CFR, JSC (RTD.), Emir of Lafia Bare-Bari, Nasarawa State. He was appointed Chancellor on 6 April 2023

Brief Biography:
He graduated from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1980, and from the Nigerian Law School in Lagos in 1981. 

He was appointed a Magistrate in August 1982 and worked up to being Chief Magistrate by 1988, Deputy Chief Registrar in 1990 and Substantive Chief Registrar of the High Court of the FCT in 1991. He was elevated to the Court of Appeal in December 2007 and the Supreme Court of Nigeria in December 2016. 

In 2019 he became the 17th Emir of Lafia Bare-Bari, and also serves as Chairman of the Nasarawa State Council of Emirs. His appointment as Chancellor links the university to Nigeria’s traditional leadership structures and reinforces its ceremonial and ambassadorial representation.

The Chancellor plays a largely ceremonial role—presiding over convocations and representing the university in formal contexts—while operational management is conducted by the Vice-Chancellor and other principal officers.

##Accreditation and Recognition
Accreditation and recognition are critical markers of the quality and credibility of academic programmes. For the University of Maiduguri:

A panel visit from the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2025 reported that the B.Sc. Physiology programme in Basic Medical Sciences earned a programme score of 95.45% and was awarded FULL accreditation. 

Similarly, a panel visit in November 2024 to the History programme awarded a score of 91.74% and likewise granted full accreditation. 

The university received an accreditation visit for its College of Medical Sciences from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) in October 2025.
