##Founder
The University of Jos does not have a single individual “founder” in the conventional sense. It emerged from a governmental initiative. Specifically: what became UniJos began as a satellite campus of the University of Ibadan in November 1971. 

In October 1975, the then Nigerian military government established it as a separate university.

Therefore the “founding” can be credited to the Federal Government of Nigeria under the regime of the time, with the academic leadership (for example Professor E. A. Ayandele as Acting Principal of the campus) playing formative roles.

##History
The history of the University of Jos illustrates how higher education institutions evolve, adapt and respond to national needs. UniJos began its life in November 1971 as a campus of the University of Ibadan, with the appointment of Professor E. A. Ayandele as its first Acting Principal. 

The campus was located at what is now the Township campus in Jos along Murtala Mohammed Way. The first set of students were admitted in January 1972, initially on pre-degree programmes. Academic degree courses in the Faculty of Arts were introduced in October 1973, and then Science and Education faculties followed in 1974. 

In October 1975, the Nigerian federal government officially established the University of Jos as a separate institution. 

From very modest beginnings, UniJos expanded in both scale and scope. It acquired the Bauchi Road Campus to accommodate the Faculties of Natural, Environmental, Medical Sciences and Education. 

Over subsequent years the university added faculties, departments, postgraduate programmes, and research centres.

The campus has grown in terms of staff and student numbers, as well as in physical infrastructure. Today, the university serves tens of thousands of students across undergraduate and postgraduate levels, drawn from across Nigeria and beyond. The institution has had to confront typical challenges faced by Nigerian universities: infrastructure constraints, student accommodation shortage, funding issues, and demands for quality assurance and accreditation. For example, as of 2024 the Vice-Chancellor lamented a shortage of hostels relative to the number of enrolled students at UniJos.

In more recent years, the University of Jos has achieved significant milestones: for example securing major accreditation wins for many of its programmes (discussed below), and being ranked among Nigeria’s top institutions in global university rankings.

##Chancellor
The Chancellor of the University of Jos is Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli (Emir of Zazzau). 

Brief Biography:
Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli holds the traditional title of Emir of Zazzau, a significant traditional institution in Kaduna State, Nigeria. As Chancellor, his role is ceremonial—serving as the titular head of the university, presiding over convocations, and representing the institution in high-profile engagements. The appointment of such a distinguished figure reflects the university’s blend of academic governance with Nigeria’s broader social and cultural leadership structures. Through his position, the university maintains strong links to tradition, national identity and public service, while internally the day-to-day academic administration is handled by the Vice-Chancellor, Senate and other bodies.

##Accreditation and Recognition

In July 2024 the institution announced that National Universities Commission (NUC) granted full accreditation status to 26 academic programmes. 

According to the report 23 undergraduate programmes and one postgraduate programme were fully accredited, while two undergraduate programmes received interim accreditation. Approximately 93.3% of the 75 academic programmes had full accreditation. 

Earlier reports show that UniJos had achieved over 90% full accreditation for its undergraduate programmes. 

Moreover, in October 2025 UniJos was ranked among Nigeria’s top 10 institutions in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, placing it in the global bracket of 1201–1500 universities. 

For specialised fields: the university is listed by the Council of Nigerian Mining Engineers & Geoscientists (COMEG) as having accredited programmes in geology and mining engineering.
