The Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Spiritans) was founded in France on May 27, 1703, and its educational and evangelisation mission in Nigeria began in 1885. Over decades, the Spiritans established primary and secondary schools and institutions of higher learning (such as a School of Philosophy, etc.). Eventually, the idea of founding a full-fledged university emerged under the leadership of the Holy Ghost (Spiritans) Province of Nigeria South East, seeking to deepen the access to university education and to provide a value-based tertiary option in the region.

The formal approval came on December 6, 2017, when the federal government of Nigeria, on the recommendation of the National Universities Commission (NUC), granted SUN a licence to operate as a private conventional university.The university took off its academic activities in the 2018/2019 academic session, initially with fifteen departments across the Faculties of Natural & Applied Sciences, Arts, Management and Social Sciences, and units of General & Entrepreneurial Studies.
